Loofah

Loofah is a climbing vine that is widely cultivated for food and sponge uses, and has been used in bathhouses and kitchens for centuries.

In appearance, a loofah looks like a cucumber, and is harvested for food before they mature in many parts of Asia. However, when allowed to mature and dry on the vine, loofah can be harvested as a sponge to be used in the bathroom or kitchen.

In the shower, loofah can be used to exfoliate dead skin cells and improve circulation of blood throughout the body. By removing the top layer of dead epidermis cells, you will make your skin appear smoother and less wrinkled.

Loofah Source

We have formed relationships with a number of farmers to grow and process our loofah. As this plant is primarily grown as a vegetable it was necessary to spend a lot of time with these farmers to gain their confidence and show them the necessary steps to extend the growing season beyond that for the vegetable crop and to dry the loofah to our high standards. We work with farmers and their families on the techniques for cleaning, drying and packaging of loofah to our requirements.

We pre-purchase the loofah crops so as the farmers are guaranteed an income at an agreed price, then we pay above daily rates to farmers and their family members to cut, process and package a range of loofah products. This approach therefore provides income to these communities from both the loofah growing plus the value-adding processes to produce our finished products.
