There is evidence that our sense of smell is linked with the areas of our brain that control our emotions. And interestingly, if you are feeling anxious, certain fragrances can these feelings. Therefore, the answer is positive to “can essential oils help with anxiety.”

For years I have used various oils to ease anxiety. A favourite is Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea). Others include lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), rose (Rosa damascena), and orange (Citrus sinensis). Also bergamot (Citrus aurantium), lemon (Citrus limon), clary sage (Salvia sclarea), and geranium (Pelargonium spp.). These have review been reviewed scientifically.

However, there remain questions on the use of these in combating anxiety. These include appropriate dosage and frequency. Some applied directly to the skin may cause irritation.

Generally, we can say scientific research is yet to confirm definitively that they ease anxiety. However, in my experience, taking a break to experience your favourite relaxing essential oil may help mellow you out. Therefore, can these oils help with anxiety? Probably, yes.
