You may have noticed that a lot of brands these days are on the cruelty-free cosmetics bandwagon. Fact is, they bring out the cruelty-free banner to leverage sales. And that is the extent of their interest—increased sales. They may not have a lot of interest per se in cruelty issues.

Two things about cruelty-free cosmetics—first, while a product may be cruelty-free, in fact, most synthetic and new ingredients have at some time been animal tested. Does that make the product cruelty free? No.

Second, check out the parent company of the brand. Do they claim cruelty-free cosmetics? Small ethical and cruelty-free companies are acquired by large brands. For example, the global giant SC Johnson. These large companies openly admit to testing on animals during product development.

Further, many brands exporting cosmetics to China must have their products undergo animal testing. Although in recent times during 2021 we have seen some changes in China.

The devil is in the detail with cruelty-free cosmetics

The fact is, most brands do not manufacture their own products. They use contract manufacturers. The brand, therefore, does not have an intimate knowledge of what occurs in the manufacturing process. In fact, the brand is far removed from manufacturing.

A company may claim, “We do not test on animals,” but it could still contract other companies to do the testing.

So even if you try to buy cosmetics from animal-friendly brands, there’s still a good chance that other products you use are tested on animals. Plus, much like the word “organic,” the wording “cruelty-free” means nothing.

These terms are not defined or regulated.  Companies can make any claim about their animal testing policies. There is no regulated definition of what is cruelty-free.  We have a situation where companies will write on the packaging that their product is “not tested on animals.” But may only refer to the item itself, not its ingredients. Or, a third, unknown party does animal testing.

The Indochine Natural Approach

We support cruelty-free cosmetics.  We use simple plant-based ingredients harvested by human hands. These have been around for centuries. Our ingredients are sustainable, safe, and effective. Ingredients that do not require animal testing for safety. Ingredients with old-fashioned and pure values from simpler times. We do not use synthetic ingredients. And, we manufacture in our own production facility. So we know what’s going into every handmade product.
